Smart medical business opportunities are endless. Are Taiwanese industry players ready?

The ultimate challenge for Taiwan’s medical electronics industry

A startup company established in 2017, SURGLASSES, has developed a set of smart medical glasses for surgical use. The product combines Mixed Reality (MR) and computer vision technology. Surgeons wearing the smart glasses during surgery can see preoperative medical scan images projected onto the patient's body. This allows them to obtain the correct position of the patient's organs for more precise surgical outcomes. This is particularly helpful in high-risk orthopedic surgeries, such as precision-demanding spinal corrections.

In 2018, SURGLASSES participated in the Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2018) in the United States, led by the Ministry of Science and Technology. Their medical surgery smart glasses garnered significant attention from professionals in the medical field at the exhibition, and they received active invitations for clinical collaboration from the University of Southern California (USC) Keck School of Medicine. It took five years from the initial conceptualization of the product in 2010 to its entry into the operating room for clinical trials. Finally, it is expected to receive market approval this year. Wang Minliang, the founder and CEO of SURGLASSES, expressed that the process was indeed very challenging.
