The Ministry of Economic Affairs' Industrial Development Bureau actively assists Taiwanese companies in establishing innovative application solutions. Under the guidance of the "Smart City and Rural Life Application Development Program," the newly established startup "SURGLASSES" pioneered the world's first smart surgical glasses solution developed domestically. Utilizing MR (Mixed Reality) technology and the principles of perspective, these smart glasses allow surgeons to see patient bones and tissues in real-time, reducing the need to turn to view images on screens and thereby significantly shortening surgery time by over 30% while enhancing surgical precision. Additionally, the solution can store a large amount of image data, reducing the frequency of X-ray exposure for patients and minimizing radiation exposure risks.
To assist in the international export of outstanding domestic achievements and strengthen ties with New Southbound countries, the Industrial Development Bureau led domestic manufacturers to participate in a Smart City exhibition in Selangor, Malaysia. This effort led to SURGLASSES gaining the attention of the Malaysian KPJ Healthcare Group, facilitating collaboration between SURGLASSES and Malaysian image analysis company Photomedic Solution Sdn Bhd, as well as KPJ APSH Hospital. This collaboration marked the first clinical trial of domestically developed smart surgical glasses in Malaysia.
The trial received unanimous praise from the Malaysian medical community. Dr. Abd. Wahab Abd. Ghani, Medical Director and renowned orthopedic surgeon at KPJ APSH Hospital, expressed that this medical device has immense potential to improve traditional surgical methods in complex surgeries, significantly enhancing surgical efficiency and precision.
Today, SURGLASSES, KPJ Group, and Photomedic Solution jointly announced this fruitful outcome in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. They plan to deepen their cooperation and conduct pilot projects, with the goal of scaling up operations in Malaysia by the end of the year. The Industrial Development Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs anticipates using this case to propel Taiwanese companies to establish a firm foothold in the Southeast Asian medical market and further establish Taiwan as a global leader in smart surgical glasses technology.
