Bridging the Gap in Nursing Workforce: Yuan Ze University Launches Healthcare Science Department to Cultivate Talent

To address the shortage of nursing professionals, Yuan Ze University in Taoyuan has established a nursing department approved by the Ministry of Education. The inaugural class this year comprises 45 students. Today, the nursing department held its opening ceremony. Taoyuan Deputy Mayor Wang Ming-jyue expressed hope that Yuan Ze University's New Taipei Branch College of Health Sciences could relocate to Taoyuan in the future, further providing high-quality medical and health services to residents.

According to research projects by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, it is estimated that Taiwan will face a nursing workforce shortage of up to 24,000 people by 2024, with an expected vacancy rate of 6.53%, which is increasing annually. As of 2023, there were approximately 277,000 people holding nursing licenses, but only around 163,000 were actively practicing, representing a practice rate of only about 60%.

During the ceremony, Yuan Ze University President Liao Ching-jong stated that the establishment of the nursing department marks a significant milestone for the university. It also propels Yuan Ze University towards establishing its sixth college, the College of Health Sciences, to cultivate healthcare professionals and provide better resources. Apart from collaborations with institutions like the Far Eastern Memorial Hospital Medical Center and the New International Hospital in Nan Taoyuan's largest high-end community teaching hospital, future collaborations with Ten-Chen Hospital are also planned. These collaborations aim to nurture nursing professionals with cloud technology and digital solution capabilities, aspiring for graduates to become leaders in smart nursing care.

Mr. Wang expressed hope for the relocation of Yuan Ze University's New Taipei Branch College of Health Sciences to Taoyuan in the future, further enhancing the provision of high-quality medical and health services to residents.

Su Ying-hua, the director of the nursing department at Yuan Ze University, mentioned that in anticipation of the first batch of students, they would introduce state-of-the-art medical imaging dissection tables. The department will utilize software covering six major categories: human anatomy, embryology, animal anatomy, medical image renderers, preoperative planning, pathology, and histology, alongside over 400 real case studies and 6,500 nursing licensure exam questions.

Su Ying-hua added that they would also introduce VR human anatomy teaching software, comprehensive care simulation models, and teaching models and equipment necessary for various basic medical and nursing professional courses. This setup aims to create the best quality smart medical and nursing learning environment, providing students with vivid and intuitive learning experiences to enhance their learning efficiency and effectiveness. The department will also collaborate with Yuan Ze University's engineering-related departments in interdisciplinary cooperation to accelerate the advancement of clinical intelligent care through next-generation smart thinking.
